"Unity is our goal," says Hu, who moved to Cupertino in 1984. "The logo of our event—featuring six people standing on a bridge holding hands—conveys our hope that the parade can serve as a bridge to bring people of different ethnicities together."

Like most cities in California, Cupertino is struggling to provide services with a limited budget while striking a balance between new development and existing neighborhoods. The increasing influence of Asian immigrants in Cupertino's schools and business community adds another dimension -- and occasional controversy -- to local politics. Both Lowenthal and Kris Wang have pledged to bring the increasingly diverse community together.
